I’ve had it in my head to play the Fallout games in order for a while, but never got around to starting the project. After watching the Amazon Prime series, I got a hankering to play some Fallout, so here I am.
My introduction to the game was Fallout 3 on the Xbox and I’ve also played New Vegas and a bit of Fallout 4. I decided to tackle this marathon in chronological order, so I’m starting with Fallout 76, which I had never played before.
Fallout 76 is an MMO set in Appalachia 25 years after the nuclear war that wiped out most of humanity. You have the option to play with other players, but you can also play the game solo.
The game opens with the iconic line, “War never changes” as part of a propaganda video lauding Vault 76 as a way to preserve the American way of life by providing a place for the country’s “best and brightest” to escape the nuclear bombs and restore America once it is safe to come out.
Once the video is over, I wake up in Vault 76 and immediately transition to the character creation screen. I decide how I want my character to look and give her a name and my first quest begins.
My first task is to pick up and equip my Pip Boy. Once that is finished, the Reclamation Day quests begins.
It seems everyone else has already left the vault and for some unexplained reason, I have not. I walk around interacting with robots and collecting some basic supplies until I’m given the task to discover what the Overseer’s mission is.
I go into her office and play a holotape on her terminal, where I learn she was tasked with finding and securing some nuclear silos in Appalachia. I proceed to leave the vault and have the option to start as a “Battle Ready Dweller” or a “Fresh Dweller.”
I like to start from the start, so I choose Fresh Dweller, which starts me at level 2 with a single perk and some basic equipment. Immediately outside the vault door is another robot, who tells me about some shifty ladies who seem to be trying to get in the vault.
I talk to them and they explain that most of the residents of Appalachia were wiped out by the bombs or some monsters called the scorched. However, a radio broadcast claiming there is a treasure buried in the region has pulled in wastelanders from the surrounding area.
Lacey bought a tip from a man at a bar called the Wayward that the treasure was hidden in Vault 76. I break the news to her that she’s been misinformed.
She suggests I visit the Wayward to see what I can find out about where the Overseer went. I set off for the Wayward, but pick up a new quest along the way to investigate a dead body in a cabin.
Searching the body turns up a safe key, checklist, and a supply list. I then pick up my first daily quest “A Better Tomorrow.” For this quest, I need to speak to a member of the Responders.
I talk to Lane and he asks me to retrieve some artifacts from the Mothman cult. I then proceed to a creepy cave where I kill a few cult members and retrieve the artifacts, which I return to Lane for a few caps and some items.
I found a spot where I could set up a shelter and unloaded my extra gear before logging out. Tomorrow, I’ll head to the Wayward again.
